New Measures Put into Place to Help Vulnerable Households Keep Warm this Winter

The UK government has announced a series of measures to provide additional support to vulnerable households during the cold winter months. These measures include a £250 winter fuel payment for low-income pensioners and other vulnerable people.

Who is eligible for the Winter Fuel Payment?

The winter fuel payment is available to those who receive the following benefits:

  • State Pension
  • Pension Credit
  • Income Support
  • Income-based Jobseeker’s Allowance
  • Income-related Employment and Support Allowance
  • Universal Credit

The payment is also available to some disabled people and carers.

How to claim the Winter Fuel Payment

Most people do not need to claim the winter fuel payment as the money is paid automatically. If you are eligible for the payment but do not receive it, you can call the Winter Fuel Payment Centre on 0800 731 0160.

Other measures to help vulnerable households

In addition to the winter fuel payment, the government has also announced a number of other measures to help vulnerable households cope with the cost of winter fuel bills. These measures include:

  • A £140 million Cold Weather Payment scheme to provide extra help to those most vulnerable to the cold
  • The Energy Company Obligation (ECO) scheme, which requires energy companies to provide free or discounted energy efficiency measures to low-income households
  • The Warm Home Discount scheme, which provides a one-off payment to help low-income households pay their winter fuel bills

These measures are designed to help vulnerable households stay warm and safe this winter.
